Manteo NC is a quaint town on Roanoke Island where visitors can experience the rich history, resilience, pioneering spirit and culture of the Outer Banks from museums to The Lost Colony, the world's first and longest running outdoor symphonic drama. Manteo began as a Britsh Colony in 1585, the oldest site for British settlement in the US. The town is named for a Native American Indian named Manteo, of the Croatan. Manteo had been "civilized" by the English. Manteo and another native were liaisons between the settlers and the Indians. Manteo, Lord of Roanoke, was the first Native American to receive a title of nobility. A statue dedicated to Virginia Dare, first English child born in America in 1587 to Ananias Dare and Elinor White Dare, is placed in the Elizabethian Gardens.
